Power Management for Electronic Systems
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications of power management systems in electronics. It covers various aspects such as voltage regulation, linear and switching regulators, power management techniques for mobile systems, and battery management. Students will gain practical knowledge on how to design, select, and implement power management components, as well as optimize performance.

Module 1
Introduction to power management:
What is power management, application, need of power management, different parts of a power management system, discrete vs integrated power management.
Module 2
Voltage Regulator:
What is a voltage regulator, why we need a regulator, types of voltage regulator – Linear and Switching, isolated and non-isolated regulator, choosing between types of regulators, features and performance metrics of voltage regulators, examples of voltage regulators available from different companies, how to select the right voltage regulator for an electronic system.
Module 3
Linear Regulators and LDOs:
Basic concept of linear regulator, Devices used for pass element, Performance parameters, characteristic of an error amplifier, stability analysis and compensation techniques, overcurrent and short circuit protection, Sources of error/offset in LDO, error correction techniques.
Module 4
Switching Regulators:
Basic operation, switching vs linear regulator, types of switching regulators, Losses in switching regulators, Volt-second balance, Control techniques (voltage mode, current mode, hysteretic control), voltage and current ripples, CCM and DCM operation, PSM and PFM operation, types of PWM – trailing, leading and dual edge modulation.
