Basic Strength of Materials

Introduction to stress and strain – Hooke’s law, stress and strain transformations, principal stresses and strains – Torsion of circular sections – Thin-walled pressure vessels – Bending and shearing stresses in beams of symmetric cross-sections – Deflections of statically determinate beams by various methods – Stresses due to combined loading, theories of failure. Introduction of theory of elasticity, field equations, Airy’s stress – function, two-dimensional problems in Cartesian coordinates, Lame’s solution for thick cylinders.
