Overall Structure
There are three levels in the IIT Madras Degree program and to get the BS Degree in Management and Data Science from IIT Madras, a learner has to successfully complete the three levels.
There is also the flexibility to exit at any level. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education) or Diploma(s) from IIT Madras or BS Degree in Management and Data Science from IIT Madras.
Courses and Credits in Each Level:
Foundation Level: 32 credits | 8 courses
Diploma Level:
• Data Analytics for Business: 36 credits | 8 courses + 2 projects
• Other Courses at Diploma level: 24 credits | 6 courses
(Total Diploma Level: 60 credits | 14 courses + 2 projects)
BS Degree Level: 50 credits | 6 core courses + 22 elective offerings
Total credits to be earned to get:
Foundation Certificate: 32 credits
Diploma in Data Analytics for Business: 68 credits (32 Foundation + 36 Track)
Diploma Level: 92 credits (32 Foundation + 60 Diploma)
BS Degree in Management and Data Science: 142 credits
Completion time: upto 8 years
The time period is based on learner’s preferred pace and performance in assessments. Expected learner engagement: ~10 hrs/course/week.
Intermediate milestones need to be completed. The learner must complete the degree within 8 years.

Duration of each course: 12 weeks — Each week comprising 2-3 hrs of videos, practice questions, text transcripts, and online graded assignment(s).
In-person invigilated quizzes and exams at designated centers as per the grading pattern defined for each course.
Term Structure
Every year is divided into three terms of four months each — January Term, May Term and September Term.

Each term of four months has 12 weeks of coursework (video lectures and assignments), 2 in-person invigilated Quizzes, and End Term Exams. Depending on the course, assessments may include programming exams, mini projects, vivas, take home assignments, etc.
Course Registrations
In each term, a learner may register for up to 4 courses based on course prerequisite requirements.

Level Progression Requirements:
- Foundation Level: All 8 courses must be successfully completed before enrolling in any Diploma Level course.
- Diploma Level: All courses and projects must be successfully completed before enrolling in any Degree Level course.
- BS Degree Level: All courses must be successfully completed to graduate with the BS in Management and Data Science Degree.
Assessments
Continuous evaluation combining online assignments, in-person quizzes, and comprehensive end-term examinations.
There are 3 types of assessments for each course:
Weekly Assignments
Online submissions every week. Average of best 5 of first 7 assignments >= 40/100 required for end-term hall ticket.
Two Invigilated Quizzes
Conducted at end of Week 4 and Week 8 at designated test centers. Mandatory to attend at least one quiz.
End Term Exam
1.5-hour in-person invigilated exam per course on Sundays. Accounts for 50% of the Total Course Score (T).
In addition, assessments may include programming exams, mini projects, vivas, take home assignments, etc. Total passing score is ≥ 40/100 with letter grades S, A, B, C, D, E.
Exam Cities
Invigilated Quizzes and End Term exams are conducted across 150+ in-person centers across India and international centers.
The Invigilated Quizzes and End Term exams are conducted in a number of cities spread across India and select international cities.
Students in India
All students residing in India or physically present in India on exam day must write exams at one of the physical exam centres in India.
Learners Outside India
In-person exam centers operate in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and UAE. Learners in other countries take remote proctored exams with location pinning. Additional exam fees apply. Contact: ge@study.iitm.ac.in.

Institution Fee Advance & Scholarship Support
IIT Madras provides fee support for learners from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds depending on learner category and family income:

Repeat Course / End Term Fee: Repeating full course requires re-payment of full course fee. Repeating end-term exam only requires end-term exam fee (₹1,000 for Foundation; ₹2,000 for Diploma/Degree).
Foundation Level
The Foundation Level comprises 8 courses in English, Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Thinking, Economics, Accounting, and Management.
Requirements for Registration
The learner should apply for and clear the Qualifier Process.
Options on Successful Completion
Learners have the following two options when they successfully complete all 8 Foundation Level courses:
Exit: The learner may exit with a Foundation Certificate from Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), IIT Madras.
Proceed to Next Level: The learner can join the Diploma Level.

Diploma Level
The courses in the Diploma Level are divided into 2 parts: (1) Courses and projects that form a part of the Diploma in Data Analytics for Business, and (2) Other courses in economics, finance, and management. All of these need to be passed to complete the Diploma Level.
Requirements for Registration
The learner should have cleared all 8 Foundation Level courses.
Options on Successful Completion
Option 1: Learners who complete all the courses and projects in the foundation and diploma levels with an overall CGPA ≥ 6.0 and a CGPA ≥ 7.0 for the projects, within a time duration of 15 terms (5 years) can choose to proceed to the Degree Level of the Program.
Option 2: Learners may choose to exit with the Diploma in Data Analytics for Business from IIT Madras if their learning goal has been achieved.
Important: Learners who do not meet these CGPA requirements at the end of the Diploma level or do not complete this within 15 terms will not be allowed to continue to the degree level.

BS Degree Level
for BS in Management and Data Science
Upon successful completion of all Foundation and Diploma requirements (92 cumulative credits), learners enter the BS Degree Level comprising 6 mandatory & core courses plus a wide selection of 22 electives (50 credits, total 142 credits to graduate).
Requirements for Registration
The learner should have cleared all 8 courses in Foundation Level and all courses + projects in Diploma Level.
On Successful Completion
Once the learner successfully completes 142 credits and all course requirements, they graduate with the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Management and Data Science from IIT Madras.
